On December 29, 2020, USCIS confirmed what we already know – it is experiencing substantial delays in scheduling or rescheduling application support center (ASC) appointments to collect biometrics. In its announcement, the USCIS explained that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and safety procedures, ASCs are operating at 65% of pre-COVID levels. The current state of operations are:
- Approximately 10,400 appointments are being scheduled per day.
- Most cancelled appointments have not been rescheduled.
- About 1.3 million applications are awaiting biometrics appointments as of mid-December 2020.
- The wait time for appointments will vary and depend upon the capacity and demand at individual ASC locations throughout the country.
- under limited, undisclosed circumstances, the USCIS might reuse biometrics from previous applications, rather than schedule a biometrics appointment. If USCIS determines that it will reuse an applicant’s biometrics, the applicant will receive an I-797 notice stating that a biometrics appointment is not needed.
- Walk-ins for biometrics collection at ASCs are not permitted except for military applicants and family members.
Applicants who receive a biometrics appointment notice should check the USCIS office Closings webpage before attending the appointment.
